Sean Corbin visiting CoffeeTree Books
November 7 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Sean L. Corbin, a graduate of the Creative Writing BFA and English MA programs at Morehead State University, has written and published a poetry chapbook, The Leper Dreams of Snow, through Finishing Line Press. Corbin will read selected poems from his collection.
The author says his poems “confront everyday trivialities, universal crises, and the significance of Curious George, all from the vantage point of a husband and father desperate to live his best life but too sick—physically or emotionally—to fully engage.” While his specific health issues are never named in the book, the author contracted Hepatitis C from a blood transfusion during heart surgery as a toddler. He was cured while finishing his Creative Writing MFA degree at the University of Kentucky; he was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which he has learned to manage through medication and artistic expression.
His poetry aims to instill readers with “beauty, humor, and a bit of hope.”
“The voices of these poems earn their grim and graceful epiphanies in language that is fresh, tough, and daring in its inventions. This is the poetry of a grown man facing the crises of mind and body with verve and relentless courage. The Leper Dreams of Snow is an aesthetic and humanist victory for all of us who still believe in the edifying powers of poetry,” says poet George Eklund.
Corbin counts his wife and sons, his late father, David Lynch, former mentors, and poets Kaveh Akbar and Rae Armentrout as influences for his poetry.
Corbin’s poetry and literary reviews have recently appeared in Still: The Journal, Boudin, Solidago, CircleShow, Poetry Fix, Vine Leaves Literary Journal, Vinyl Poetry, and JMWW. Originally from Mount Sterling, Ky., Sean Corbin now lives in Lexington, Ky. He is the co-founder, with his wife Amanda, of the Milestone Art Collective
